Davis Sons, Publishers CORINTH-HOLDERS TALENT WINNERS Three senior 4-H Club members of Corinth-Holders School were winners in the county-wide 4-H Club talent show held at Smithfield last week. The trio, composed of Vonnie Jean Richardson, Gail Ren frow and Elmerine Richardson, left to right, won a blue ribbon and the chance to compete in the state-wide contest. Local CD Director Names Staff and Committeemen Civil Defense Director for Zeb- i ulon Pat Farmer has announced the special staff and committeemen for 1957. Director Farmer said he feels this list of men and women of Zebulon are most capable aryl ef ficient, and in the event of some disaster they will be able to take charge of the situation fully. (Continued on Page 7) Heart Specialist To Speak Tuesday To Junior Women Dr. John Smith, noted North Carolina heart specialist, will be the speaker at the Junior Woman’s Club meeting to be held Tuesday night, March 19, Mrs. Ralph Bunn, president of the club, has an nounced. Dr. Smith, a former president of the North Carolina Heart Asso ciation, will speak on various as pects of the heart, why heart at (Continued on Page 7) Hinton Is Rated Superior in Piano Division of Contest Mickey Hinton won superior rat ing in the piano division at the annual contest-music festival in Raleigh Saturday. The festival, held at the State School for the Blind is sponsored annually by the Raleigh District of the N. C. Music Educators’ As sociation. Mickey, 13, is a seventh grade student at Wakelon School. He participated in the jun’or division, playing Minuet in G Minor by Bach and Sonatina in G Major by Beethoven. He is the son of Mr, and Mrs. Glenn Hinton and has been a pupil of Mrs. Rodney Mc Nabb for several years. Miss Betsy ' Brantley was an entrant in the eighth district mu sic contest, sponsored annually by the North Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs, held in Durham Saturday. She performed several numbers on the piano but was not adjudged a winner. Both Miss Brantley and Mr. Hinton were selected as partici pants in the contests by the Zebu Ion Senior Woman’s Club. * Hundred Gallons One huriderd gallons of water are required for the production of a single ear of corn. Carden Club Flower Show Set forMay; DateNot Fixed At the March meeting of the Carmen Flowers Garden Club, Mrs. George Tucker, president, told the club members the du ties of flower show committeemen. Why have flower shows? Mrs. Tucker answered with: “It stimu lates interest in varieties of plants; members learn new methods of hy bridization, cultivation and fertili zation; learn color and design; learn how to plan attractive gar dens; learn how to create more ar tistic arrangements; raise the standards of horticulture; and it is educational.” She said there are four differ ent types of shows: indoor, house to house, out door and state. The indoor shows must be 50% de voted to horticulture and 50% to arrangement. “Scoring,” she said “comes un der two classifications: arrange ment and composition. The defi nition of an arrangement is that there must be a use of cut flowers only. A composition is an arrange ment of both live flowers and dried materials.” At this meeting no definite date was decided on for the flower show to be held here, but it will be in May. The date will be an nounced by this paper. The meeting was held in the home of Mrs. Eldred Rountree, who acted as hostess. At the close of the meeting, Mrs. Rountree serv ed strawberry shortcake, nuts and coffee to the 13 guests present. Finals for Rifle Competition Held At Local Armory Finals for the ^tate-wide Na tional Guard small bore rifle com petition were held in Zebulon’s National Guard armory Sunday, with four teams participating. Company B, 139th Infantry Regi ment, of Warrenton won the all day meet. Expert riflemen began firing in the armory range 8 o’clock Sunday morning. The meet was concluded at 5:30 in the afternoon. Lt. Col. Clarence B. Shimer of Raleigh, G-3 for the 30th Infan try Division, was in charge of the competition. Participating were Company B of Warrenton; Company M, 119th Infantry Regiment, of Warsaw; Headquarters Battery, 112th FA Battalion, Lenoir; and Headquar ters Battery, 252nd AAA Group, Wilmington. Members of the winning team were First Lt. Roger L. Currie, Company B commanding officer; First Lt. Cason S. Pridgen, M/Sgt. Ollie C. Leonard, Pvt. Jesse E. Ranes, Sfc. Roy A. Cameron, and M/Sgt. Ernest M. Jones. This is the second year in suc cession that the Warrenton Na tional Guardsmen have won the championship. The competition is conducted under official rules of the National Rifle Association for small arms fir ing. Zebulon was selected as the site for the finals because it is central ly located in the state and has ade quate facilities for small arms fir ing. PTA Date Has Been Postponed Wakelon School Parent-Teach er Association will be postponed from March 18 to March 25, it has been announced by Mrs. El dred Rountree, president. At the Monday night, March 25 meeting, H. A. Hodge, Jr., Eastern Divisional Supervisor, N-. C. Board of Paroles, will speak on Juvenile Delinquency, Mrs. Garland Godwin, program chairman, has said. Mr. Hodge has been associated with the Pa role Board for the past 16 years and has made an extensive study of crime among teenagers. An entertaining musical pro gram has been arranged, and friends and especially patrons of the organization are cordially in vited to attend this meeting. Attends Dental Clinics Dr. L. M. Massey attended a se ries of Post Graduate Dental Clin ics held by the District of Colum bia and the Georgetown Univer sity in Washington, D. C., this week. The clinics this year were quite outstanding and a greater effort was exerted to cover every pro fessional approach of the dental field of practice. This graduate course was signifi cant because it was the twenty fifth series of clinics given by the District Organization and the Georgetown University. Mrs. Massey accompanied her husband on this trip. Town Board Permits Police Department to Buy Two-Way Radio CORRECTION Wakelon School pre-school clinic for children who will enter school in September will be held Monday, April 15, ra ther than Saturday, April 13, as was erroneously stated in Friday’s issue of this paper. Parents who have children who enter Wakelon School in September are urged to keep this date in mind. They are al so requested to bring the child’s birth certificate show ing the child’s age at the time he is registered at the clinic. Children who will be 6 years old by October 16, 1957, are eligible to attend public schools during the 1957-58 school year. Baptist Choirs Will Attend Festival At Raleigh The Junior and Chapel Choirs of Zebulon Baptist Church will be entries participating in the Region al Choir Festival to be held at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Ra leigh Wednesday night, March 20. This festival, along with the Statewide Festival to be held la ter on, is sponsored by the De partment of Church Music of the Baptist State Convention. There are 37 members of the Junior Choir and 11 Chapel Choir members. The Chapel Choir, which was newly-formed in the fall by the church’s minister of music, will enter the festival for the first time. Miss Margaret Anne English is director of the choirs, and Miss Carolyn Hinton will serve as ac companist. Will Be Used For Civil Defense Purposes Before too much longer Zebulon Police Department will be able to contact by two-way radio Wake County Sheriff Department and other surrounding towns that have two-way communication systems. At the March Town Board meet ing, Police Chief Willie B. Hopkins was authorized to purchase a two way radio system for the town of Zebulon. Only four other towns in Wake County comparable in size to Zeb ulon have sucb systems. They are Wake Forest, Fuquay Springs, Apex and Cary. Police Chief Hopkins said the set will cost approximately $600. Half of this purchase price will be paid for out of Wake County Civil Defense funds. Wake County Civil Defense of ficials are urging all towns in the county to have access to such sys tems in case of emergencies and disasters. Mayor Wilbur Debnam said he is highly pleased with the Town Board’s reaction in deciding to purchase a two-way communica tion system. He said he feels that if a disaster should ever strike the town this communication system may be its life saver. The two-way radio set-up will have the same frequency as the system used by the Wake County Sheriffs Department. Once the system is installed Zebulon po lice will be able to contact the county office and surrounding towns which have the system. It will also be used to contact the local police car when it is be (Continued on Page 8) Wake County FB Auxiliary Head Praises Farm Bureau The Farm Bureau Auxiliary held its monthly meeting Monday night, March 11, in Wakelon Home Eco nomics Building with guests from surrounding towns. A most interesting program was planned with Mrs. Callie Hard wick, N. C. State College Housing Specialist, giving an interesting 'and informative talk on coordinat ing color in the home. “You should have something bright, something light, and some thing dark in the color scheme of your home,” she told the women present. She demonstrated how to pick up colors in the color scheme of your home with accessories. Vassar Shearon, president of Wake County Farm Bureau, made a short talk prior to introducing the principal speaker of the eve ning, Mrs. Irby Walker, admin istrative director of Farm Bureau Women. Mrs. Walker expressed her ap preciation at having the oppor tunity to address the Wakelon Farm. Bureau women and their guests. She told of her work in the state and how farm women can promote projects and be of great help to the men. “The Farm Bureau is a family organization,” Mrs. Walker said. “It can be strengthened with the help of the women working togeth er with their husbands and sons. She praised the local Farm Bu reau for sponsoring the Zebulon Rural Fire Truck project, calling it a “most worthwhile project to the life of the community.” She also had high praise for the local Bureau women for their part of helping to secure a sewing ma chine for the Wakelon Home Eco (Continued on Page 8)
